Dr. Marcel Machill is the Bertelsmann Foundation’s Director Media Policy. As Head of the Media Policy Section, he is responsible for media policy research and project management in the areas of broadcasting and telecommunications policy, as well as “new media policy,” which involves Internet regulation. Dr. Machill was a scholar at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA from 1997 to 1999. He holds degrees from three countries; before coming to Harvard, he studied journalism and education in Paris, France and Dortmund, Germany.

In October 2001, Dr. Machill was nominated as a University Professor for Journalism and Media Policy at Leipzig University, Germany. In addition to his research and activities as a University lecturer (eight teaching assignments since 1994), Dr. Machill has worked as a journalist for both the print and electronic media: Deutsche Welle in Cologne and Berlin, Radio France Internationale in Paris, Euronews-TV in Lyon, WDR, ORB, Radio France, Die Zeit, Frankfurter Rundschau, taz, journalist and ARD-Studio Washington. In addition, he has published numerous articles in renowned scientific journals, such as Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics, European Journal of Communication, The Journal of Media Economics, Media Perspectives, as well as seven books.

Dr. Machill is a member of the Harvard Club Rhein-Ruhr e.V., the German journalist association (Deutscher Journalistenverband – DJV), the German society for journalism and communication research (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik und Kommunikationsforschung – DGPuK), the association of graduates of the Paris School of Journalism CFJ (Association des Anciens du CFJ) and the association of journalism graduates at the University of Dortmund (Fördervein der Absolventen des Journalistikstudienganges in Dortmund – EX e.V.).

Dr. Machill has been elected as ICRA’s Vice-Chairman in September 2000 and has been reelected in September 2001.
