Internet Content Rating Association

Pull down the Tools menu.

Select “Internet Options…”

Under “Content Advisor,” click “Enable…”

You will then be prompted for a password. This password will be used to lock the settings – you must have this password to be able to turn ratings on or off, and to set the levels of restriction.

If your button reads Disable Ratings then you’ve already turned on RSACi and are ready to surf the net.

The Content Advisor dialog box will appear. If it doesn’t, click “Settings…”

Clicking on one of the key icons allows you to move the Rating slider in the middle of the window.

Leaving the slider for a given category all the way at the left will produce a Level 0 rating. This means that if a web pages content is anywhere above 0 it will be blocked.

If you would like to set the controls to be more lenient, move them over to the right. Pay attention to the descriptions as they are telling you what you are to block.

Clicking on the More Info button will bring you to this website and show a lengthy description of the RSACi Ratings Standard.

‘Users can see sites which have no rating.’ Unchecking this box will block any and all sites that have not rated with RSACi. This can be very helpful given the nature of the web and how quickly new sites are being set up every day. Unchecking this box is your best bet for blocking unwanted content from your children!

‘Supervisor can type a password to allow users to view restricted content.’ If you surf with your child, this may be a good option to have checked on. If you are browsing the web and are blocked by RSACi you will see a window and be able to assess what type of content you are about to view. If you feel it is appropriate, you may type in the supervisor password and gain access to the blocked site.

From time to time it is probably a good idea to change your password!

Type in the url of a site you always want to have access to (we’ve shown the fictitious www.goodsite.com as an example). Then click the “Always” button. You have just told I.E. that you will always want to be able to access the “Good Site” without entering a password. If you access certain unrated sites often, this will save you time and energy.

In a similar way, you can make sure that “Bad Sites” can never be accessed. To do this, type in the url of your “Bad Site” (we’ve shown the fictitious www.badsite.com) and click the “Never” button. This tells I.E. that, even though you would normally be able to access this site without a password, you wish to prevent it from being accessed. No matter what the rating, a password will be required.
