ICRAplus: The parental control that puts parents in control

Self-labelling using the ICRA system is the most open and democratic basis for content filtering. From a webmaster’s point of view, self-labelling is the only way to communicate a detailed description of the content on offer directly to filtering software. From a user’s point of view, ICRAplus allows you to define precisely what types of labelled content you do and do not want to be allowed.

When self-labelling is combined with other filtering technologies, such as artificial intelligence and large databases of websites, the end result is a robust solution that can be tailored to your needs, whatever your values.

Modules can be plugged into ICRAplus and controlled through a common user interface. Each module either generates an ICRA-compatible label or its output is converted into one and sent to the central ICRAplus unit.

Different filters are likely to report different results – that’s OK – the central unit “takes a vote” before deciding whether a particular page should be allowed or blocked according to the user’s settings. The way ICRAplus combines the different results can either be determined using one of the preset options, or the user can give different weights and priorities to each filter.

Importantly, whenever a page is blocked, users will be told what the responses of the different filters were. In this way, ICRAplus adheres rigidly to the philosophy of transparency, best summed up as “Choice not censorship.”
