C. Dianne Martin is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the George Washington University. She received a B.A. in economics and math education from Western Maryland College, an M.S. in computer science from the University of Maryland, and an Ed.D. in teacher education from the George Washington University. She is on loan to the National Science Foundation (1998-2000) as a Program Director for Computer Science in the Division of Undergraduate Education.
She has thirty years of experience in the computer field, including three years in industry with IBM as a programmer on the Apollo space project, and over 20 years of teaching at the university level. Since 1980 she has been actively involved in the field of computing in education, serving as president and national conference chair for the International Association of Computing in Education (IACE) and Washington Liaison for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). She was an ACM National Lecturer from 1990-95 and now serves on the ACM Lectureship Advisory Committee. Dr. Martin is currently the Chair of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group in Computers and Society (SIGCAS), was co-chair of the 1990, and chair of the 1996 SIGCAS Computers and the Quality of Life(CQL) Symposia. She was co-chair of the ACM Policy98 Conference in Washington, DC. Dr. Martin was the Chairman of the Board of the Recreational Software Advisory Council (RSAC), a non-profit organization providing content labels on computer games and internet web pages to help parents and teachers make informed decisions about media appropriate for children, and is a member of the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) Board of Directors.
Dr. Martin received the l986 and l988 Distinguished Service Awards from the International Association for Computing in Education(IACE). In 1987 she was inducted into the George Washington University chapter of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society and received their l987-88 Teacher of the Year Award. In l989 she received the Trustee Distinguished Alumni Award from Western Maryland College. In 1990 Dr. Martin was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and elected to the Board of Trustees at Western Maryland College. She received the Outstanding Professor in Computer Science Award from the GW Engineer’s Council for 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95 and again in 1997-98. She was elected to be an ACM Fellow in 1999.
She has spoken at numerous computer conferences, including the National Educational Computing Conferences, the two World Conferences on Computing in Education, and the 1992 IFIP World Computer Congress. In l988 she was a Computer Specialist for the USIA exhibit called Information USA that toured the Soviet Union. During the summer of 1989 Dr. Martin was a Research Scholar at the Hagley Museum and Library at Wilmington, Delaware. During the Fall, 1996, she was a Visiting Professor at Deakin University in Australia, teaching and developing a new unit on social impact and professional ethics for third year computer science students. While in Australia, she was invited to speak at an ASEAN Internet Conference in Singapore about content filtering issues. Her recent research interests focus on social and ethical impact of technology, models for distance learning over the WWW, interface usability, and design and evaluation of multimedia.
